This month, we're shining the spotlight on our Level 4 Tap class and the experienced dancers who call it home. To give you an insider's perspective, we asked our Tap teacher, Krystal, a series of questions about what makes this class unique, who it's designed for, and what dancers can expect. Her answers reveal a class that goes far beyond fast footwork. It's a place where experienced adult tap dancers continue to grow, collaborate, challenge themselves, and, above all, have fun.

Yes, the dancers can move at incredible speed when the choreography calls for it (like in a speed challenge). But what really makes this class special is the space to explore what's possible. Every week brings new challenges, fresh ideas, plenty of laughter, and a room full of dancers who are always willing to try something new.

When asked for one word to describe the class, Krystal chose:

A home for experienced adult tap dancers

Our Tap Level 4 class is Dragonfly's highest level tap class, designed for experienced adult tap dancers.

Most of the current dancers in Level 4 have been tap dancing for many years at a high standard, but reaching Level 4 isn't simply about how long you've danced. It's about building strong technique through consistent practice, continuing to challenge yourself, and progressing through the levels as your teacher believes you're ready.

Many adult tap dancers at Dragonfly Dance also attend Tap Tech classes to refine their technique and accelerate their progress, making it an excellent pathway towards Level, or build their technique and rhythm in our Level 1, 2, and 3 classes.

More than just fast feet

One of the biggest misconceptions about advanced tap is that it's all about speed.

While speed certainly has its place, Level 4 dancers are challenged in many different ways. Krystal designs classes that explore rhythm, musicality, dynamics, articulation, style and control, encouraging dancers to become expressive musicians as well as skilled technicians.

This quarter, for example, the class worked on a speed challenge, as well as dance based on a slow waltz.

"It might sound easier," says Krystal, "but tapping slowly and with control is actually harder in many ways."

Learning together

One of Krystal's favourite things about teaching Level 4 is the collaborative spirit of the class.

As she experiments with increasingly challenging choreography, the dancers contribute ideas, offer suggestions and work together to solve problems. That collaboration is an important part of tap culture once dancers have developed strong technical foundations.

Just as importantly, they enjoy themselves.

"The dancers don't take themselves too seriously," says Krystal. "That's a necessary trait for creatives."

The result is a class that is challenging, supportive and full of laughter.

Always willing to try

One of the things Krystal is proudest of is the attitude of the dancers themselves.

"They'll try anything. I've never suggested something that they've said they wouldn't at least try. Often they surprise themselves."

That willingness to step outside their comfort zone is what allows the class to keep growing, even after many years of dancing.

Never stop improving

Krystal hopes every dancer leaves the class with renewed excitement for tap.

"I hope dancers rekindle their love for tap and discover they can still get even better at it as adults."

At Dragonfly, we believe learning doesn't stop when you reach an advanced level. There's always another rhythm to discover, another challenge to tackle, and another opportunity to surprise yourself.
