Getting started

Starting or returning to dance as an adult can feel exciting, daunting, energising, awkward, inspiring, and sometimes all at once.

If you are new to Dragonfly, start by getting in touch so we can help place you in the most suitable class, level, and starting point.

This first step helps set you up for a positive experience from the beginning.

How getting started works

We run our classes in yearly quarters, and have a 3 week intake window at the start of each quarter (scroll down for dates for coming quarters)

1

Get in touch

Fill in the enquiry form below, or contact us by phone or email. Tell us a little about your experience, interests, availability, and anything else you think may help us guide you.

2

Start with 2 classes

We’ll recommend a suitable class and, for most new dancers, suggest starting with our 2-for-1 intro offer.

You can try two different classes, or attend the same class twice.

This one-time introductory pass for new dancers is valid for 30 days.

We have a 3 week window at the start of each quarter of the year for new dancers to join our classes.

3

Decide what's next

After your intro classes, we’ll check in to see how it felt and talk through options if you’d like to continue, which includes:

  • choosing pricing option (membership or pass)

  • If membership, enrol in your chosen class or classes.

Dancers paying via passes need to make their own bookings.

Choose the right class

Choosing a level reflects where you are now, so you can start or return to dance safely, confidently, and with room to progress.

We have a huge class program (over 35 classes/week) so that you can find a class that suits you.

Our dance styles include ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary.

Visit our Timetable page to see what is on offer.

Visit our Levels page to find out more about our levels and age streams.

Find out more about our Silver Dragonflies classes (designed for dancers who prefer a class with less jumping, turning, and floorwork - most people are aged 60+, but we welcome younger dancers who prefer this stream).

When recommending a starting point, we consider:

  • your experience

  • how recently you’ve danced

  • your age

  • any physical considerations, and

  • your reasons for dancing.

Many returning dancers start at a slightly lower level than they previously danced at so they can settle in comfortably. If it feels too easy, moving up is simple.

We’ll help you choose a starting point that feels achievable and supportive.

What to expect in your first class

Starting something (or somewhere) new can feel daunting, especially as an adult.

Your first class at Dragonfly is about orientation, not performance. You can expect:

  • a welcoming environment for adult dancers

  • clear guidance from the teacher

  • options offered where needed

  • time to observe, adjust, and settle in

You do not need to “keep up” or get everything right straight away.

Learning cycle & enrolment

A different approach to adult dancing

Timeframes

Quarterly structure

Dragonfly classes follow a learning cycle across each quarter of the year - January to March, April to June, July to September, October to November.

Breaks

We close for 2 weeks in December/January.  Otherwise we do not take breaks. You can take a break when you want but we're here for you year round.

Dancer Intake window

New dancers  are accepted during the first three weeks of the quarter so dancers can settle into classes from the beginning of the learning process.

Once enrolments close, new dancers usually begin at the start of the next quarter. This structure supports continuity, progression, and a stronger learning experience for everyone in the class.

A different approach for adult dancers

At Dragonfly, we structure learning differently. We carefully consider pacing, repetition, progression, and how much new information adult dancers can realistically absorb at once. This allows dancers to build not only vocabulary and memory, but also technique, artistry, confidence, and ease of movement over time.

Classes are designed to support progression, continuity, and long-term development, while still allowing flexibility for adult life and changing schedules.

This is why dancers begin through a guided placement process, and why new enrolments usually start during the first three weeks of each quarter.

Adult curriculum & method

Our classes are guided by our curriculum and teaching method, developed over more than 20 years of working with adult dancers of different ages, backgrounds, goals, and experience levels — from complete beginners through to former professional dancers.

This is based on adult learning, and takes into account the physical, cognitive, and social changes throughout adulthood.

Our system gives you the chance to develop and progress as you grow in skill and experience - something most adult dancers miss out on.
