Contemporary
Intro Course
Move with freedom. Discover your creativity.
Have you ever watched contemporary dance and wondered what it would feel like to move with that kind of freedom and expression?
This welcoming 9-week course is designed for adults who are ready to try something new. You'll build confidence, discover a new way of moving, and learn the foundations and principles of contemporary dance in a supportive environment where everyone starts together.
About the course
In this 8-week introductory course, you'll discover the foundations of contemporary dance in a supportive, structured environment designed specifically for adult beginners.
You'll learn to move with greater ease by exploring concepts such as momentum and gravity, fall and recovery, contraction and release, succession, and the relationship between your body and the floor. As the course progresses, you'll develop confidence, coordination and body awareness while discovering the expressive and creative possibilities of contemporary dance.
Each class includes exercises to prepare the spine, feet and legs for dance, before progressing to swing exercises, floor work, travelling movements through space, and simple phrases that bring everything together. Throughout the course, you'll develop the fundamental skills needed to join our ongoing Contemporary Level 1 classes.
Our contemporary teaching draws on a range of contemporary dance techniques, including Release, Limón, Cunningham and Graham.
Who should do this course?
Is this course right for you?
This course is designed for adults aged 18+ with little or no contemporary dance experience, as well as dancers returning after a long break who would like to build strong foundations before joining an ongoing class.
This is one of our mixed-age courses, and most participants are likely to be younger and middle-aged adults. The course includes floor work, travelling movements, turns, jumps and moving up and down from the floor. While many older adults will enjoy and thrive in this environment, it may not be the best choice if you are looking for a gentler pace or prefer to avoid these types of movements.
This course is a great fit if you:
Have always wanted to try contemporary dance.
Enjoy creative, expressive movement.
Are comfortable getting down to and up from the floor.
Would like to learn turns, travelling movements and jumps as your confidence develops.
Want to build the skills to continue into our ongoing Contemporary Level 1 classes.
You might prefer another option if you:
Are looking for a gentler dance experience with limited floor work.
Would prefer a class designed specifically for mature adults.
Already have significant contemporary dance experience.
